From February-May 2015, at several schools in The Netherlands, students have been working on a teaching module about Carbohydrates in Mother’s Milk, that has been developed at Science LinX for the EU-project IRRESISTIBLE. As a final assignment of this project, students developed an exhibition on what they learned using an IKEA-bookcase (according to the EXPOneer principle). These exhibitions were showcased for several weeks at the schools.
At June 6, Groningen celebrated its yearly ‘Night of Arts and Sciences’ - a city-wide festival featuring arts and sciences, at 14 locations in town with >3000 visitors. One of the locations is the Aa-church in the center of town, that is turned into the Church of Sciences every year by Science LinX.
One of the exhibits in this church were the exhibitions made by students from Lindecollege in Wolvega, and Zeldenrust-Steelantcollege in Terneuzen. More than 3000 visitors have seen the exhibitions, and learned about the important substances in mother’s milk, why breastfeeding is healthy for babies and how the adult gut differs from the neonatal gut. Some students turned their bookcase into a cow; others demonstrated the current problem in The Netherlands about the massive shipping of baby formula to China that leads to empty stores.
Next year, more schools will be using the teaching module in their classrooms, and more creative exhibitions will be produced!
